December Recap

In December, 2010, 36 quilters made 135 pairs of tree blocks ... for a pretty incredible total or 270 blocks, which will be shared among 6 winners.  Only January (Tic-Tac-Toe) and March (Wonky Log Cabins) had bigger numbers--we made 10 blocks more, or 280 blocks in each of those months.

This month, we were joined by SEVEN newbies--welcome again to Benta, Beth, Cathy, Julie (AKA Joe Tulips),  Laurina, Melinda and Sara.  (Links go to blogs for those I know about).

The Block Lotto tradition of "newbie luck" continues and three of our newbies were also winners this month.  Congrats to Benta, Julie and Sara, as well as our other three winners, Andi, Julie (Floribunda) and Ramie.

Here's the list of blocks that were made, chances donated, etc., taken from the side bar before it is wiped clean and we start all over again.

While this might not have been the biggest MONTH ever, this was our BIGGEST YEAR YET.  In 2010 we made 2170 lotto blocks.

What me?

Am I the only Sara on the list?
Why, yes, it looks like I am!

Did she really say that I get 23 blocks?
Why, yes, it looks like she did!

Oh, my goodness!  Oh, my gracious!  What a way to start the new year!

Yippee!  I'm doing the Happy Dance!

[I just announced on my blog that I finished 30 UFOs in 2010. I am REALLY ready to take on a TREE quilt for 2011.]

What do I have to do now?  I only just joined Block Lotto this month!

Sara, who is grinning like a funny face

A New Year's Eve Sneak Peek

I have been busy cropping the more than 70 photos of the January blocks that I've received from Benta, Caroline, Cathy, Debbie, Julie, Kate, Laurina, Maree, Mary Jane, Michelle, Rho and Sara to use to put together into a virtual quilt.  As I was admiring them on Flickr, I thought everyone might enjoy a little slide show.

I'll be back later with block guidelines, directions, and that virtual quilt ...

December Winners!

Sophie has given me the honor of announcing the winners of the December Wonky Tree block pairs.  The first thing I did wrong was I forgot to cut and paste a picture of the random.org selection - so you will just have to trust me.  There were six chances to win this month.  Here are the winning numbers and names

1.  #125 = Sara...............................she will receive 23 block pairs
2.  #120 = Ramie............................she will receive 23 block pairs
3.  #62 = Julie P..............................she will receive 22 block pairs
4.  #64 = Julie W............................she will receive 22 block pairs
5.  #1 = Andi..................................she will receive 22 block pairs
6.  #15 = Benta...............................she will receive 22 block pairs

Congratulations ladies!!

And, while I'm here, Happy New Year to each and everyone of the Block Lotto members!!

Going, Going, Gone

The list of names has been sent to Linda G.

While we wait for her to randomly pick our SIX WINNERS, I'm off to make a VERY BIG virtual quilt from all the photos of the January block from the sneak peekers.

one more set... just under the wire!

one more for me.

Tick, Tick, Tick ...

The hours are counting down--both for the end of 2010 and for OUR drawing for the December blocks.

I have started to put together the list for Linda G to use for the drawing later today.  Of course, I will wait until after our official deadline at noon (US East Coast time) to finalize the numbered list and send it to Linda to do the honors.

You still have a couple hours to make (more) blocks ;-)

Because I worked a couple of VERY long days this week on urgent deadlines, I will be home after making a brief appearance in the office (yea, not a holiday for us) for a meeting and following up on emails.  I should be back home and sending the list to Linda, soon after the deadline today.

FYI EIGHT quilters DONATED their chances this month and they will be distributed among our SEVEN Newbies and SEVEN more of us who haven't YET had the good fortune to win a set of lotto blocks.

A lot of people have told me they really want to win these ... and SIX of you will, very soon.

Ladies, get ready to cross your fingers ...

My December blocks...

Laura

My final pair

Now I'm up to 5! I'm crossing my fingers this time, because these trees are so great!

trees

Here is my attempt at this month's block.  I hope the green qualifies.  I may have another one by the end of the day, they just need strips added to the bottom.
Happy New Year to all,
Andra

two pair for me

These photos were taken with my iphone so the colors aren't true; the green is really green and the purple is actually more fuschia.
It's been awhile since I sewed, and my sewing room's a mess, so I had a bit of ripping out to get these right.
They are still fun, and I'd love to win. (Don't have a Christmas quilt yet!)
Linda Big D.
Sorry they are sideways.

Wednesday, December 29, 2010

I've been seeing the wonderful trees the other quilters have been making and couldn't resist trying another set. So this is number 4 for me....I hope I'll do a 5th before the weekend, to give myself another chance at winning these great blocks!

Four more sets completed

I finally got my other four sets completed.  These little trees were just SO MUCH FUN to make!  I really really would love to win this lotto.  The green and blue blocks are 12", the red is 9" and the yellow is 6" (finished sizes).
Below is a picture with the one I posted before.  They are just so cute together that I had to lay them all out.

It looks like the wind is blowing or they are dancing -- ha ha.

Cleaning "House"

If you have not made blocks for any of the last four months, your author privileges may have been removed and you have email from me about it.

But because I am human and because some of you like to challenge me by using COMPLETELY DIFFERENT email addresses when you sign up than the ones I have for you, I don't always manage to match things up correctly and get it right.  So, even if you HAVE made blocks, I might have accidentally removed your author privileges.

If I made a mistake with your account privileges, don't panic, just let me know.

If you haven't been making blocks because you're waiting for things to get a little less "liberated," don't worry, I can easily add you back in when you are ready to make and post lotto blocks again.

We now have a little bit of "breathing" room for any newbies who decide they'd like to join us.

Wendy's small forest

Here's my 4 pairs.  Sophie, please forgive my rather awful picture.  In real life, the blue is dark blue, the purple is really purpley and the yellow is really gold.  I promise they are jewel tones!  Loved doing these, and I hope to do more before the month is up.
WendyLee

A minor change for newbies joining in 2011

The process to sign up and become a blog author is going to change slightly next year.

After a new person has emailed me with:
  1. Name and (postal) mailing address
  2. Preferred E-mail address
  3. The URL of thier blog, if they have one and would like to share it
They will be all set to play.  When they have made their FIRST blocks and are ready to post them on the blog, I'm asking that they let me know and THEN I'll invite them to become an author.

This is because we ARE getting close to the maximum number of blog authors allowed AND a fair number of people join, become authors and never participate.  I think this will help keep us under the limit ... or maybe I should say I HOPE it will ;-)

Finally a pair!

6.5 x 9.5
Christmas is over, the tree and all decorations are put away, and I FINALLY got a pair of trees made! This is actually the second pair since the first set came out too wide (I would have been pruning the trees to make them only 6.5"). These were fun.

Happy New Year!!!

The Block Lotto in print

I've kown for a while that it was planned for the Quilter's World February 2011 issue ... and when a few friends mentioned seeing it, I knew it was already out.  (I thought that I'd have at least until the end of the year to tidy-up the blog ;-)

I made a trip to Joann ETC Sunday to get a copy, but I couldn't find it and no one that was working knew how to find out if they carried it.

I called the Honey Bee Quilt Store this morning and when they said they had it, I made plans to go pick up a copy for "lunch."After I paid for the magazine, I stood at the counter and carefully flipped through the pages until I found that familiar Block Lotto quilt/badge in the bottom right corner of page 10.I felt like a proud parent.

There's a nice blurb about us in the side bar, titled, "Here's what I'm reading online ..." on the From the Editor pages.

Besides some interesting quilt and bag patterns, there's also a pretty good article on how to subscribe to blogs and set up a feed reader.

We're in pretty good company in this group of blogs mentioned, too.  I think it's a nice bit of recognition for our low-key, word of mouth community and I hope it inspires more quilters to try new things and play along.

dec 2010 liberated trees

I made up six pairs of trees in the correct 6 1/2 inch width. Please donate the chances. I will keep the ones which are wider and not accepteble in the lotto. The photo includes the two pairs which were the correct width as well as the new corrected size of trees.

I hope you all will have a great, safe and prosperous 2011.

Donate my blocks

Hi Sophie, I'd like to donate my blocks this month.
There are certainly many different types of trees in our forest of blocks and all those bright jewel colours.
Hope everyone had a great Christmas and will have a wonderful new year.

December Trees - Part III

I was able to get some more black fabric and made up some more Tree blocks for BlockLotto

2 @ 6.5" blocks, 2 @ 6.5" x 9.5"

2 @ 6.5" x 9.5"

that makes a total of 5 pairs

My First Entry in Block Lotto - Trees

Here is my first contribution to the block lotto. I have been following the blog for several months and kept thinking I would join in but it just didn't happen. We got snowed in yesterday and I made these blocks. I made four more that didn't make it to the right size. I will add some background to them and put them with my other orphan blocks. They weren't as easy to make as I thought they would be.

I am a quilt teacher, longarm quilter and work in a quilt shop. My blog is here and I would love to have you visit. I am looking forward to participating regularly in 2011.

Melinda

Trees

Here is my entry this month.

Block Lotto

I am looking forward to belongong to Block Lotto this next year.

I've been seeing TREES everywhere

I've seen quilty trees similar to ours on table runners and pillows and, yes quilts, all month. I just saw Eileen's tree quilt (in progress) on the 15 Minutes of Play blog and had to share. If you take a close look, you can see how her blocks are constructed differently than ours, but the result is similar and I love the simple setting and the strong colors, don't you?

More Roses, More Thank Yous

Thank you to Ginny, Janet, Kathie, Laura and Michelle for these wonderful rose blocks.

One more pair of Dec. Trees

Had to make just one more pair - these are super fun!

The January 2011 Sneak Peek has been Mailed

During a quiet pause, I put together the sneak peek email and have sent it to everyone who has made and posted a photo of their Tree pairs this month.

If you should have received it, but didn't, please let me know ASAP.  It's also a good time to double-check that I have you on the list in the sidebar and that the number of PAIRS listed for you is correct.  In 6 days, Linda G will be randomly choosing our last winners of the year.

If you haven't made tree blocks and are looking for a hint (or two), here's a photo of some of the first fabrics I pulled from my stash to make blocks for January.

A variety of bright fabtics

Your bright fabrics may be solids, tone-on-tone prints, batiks, hand-dyes, novelty prints (kid or adult variety), florals, geometrics, plaids (woven or printed) ... if it's bright and it's quilting cotton, you can use it ;-)

You'll also need some white which may be solid or WOW (white-on-white print).

Everything will be cut from 2-1/2 inch strips, so if you have jelly rolls, noodles, or worms ... this could be the month to use them.

Sneak Peek of January Block

I ended up doing something today I never thought I'd be doing again on Christmas Eve--unpacking and packing some of my belongings into a storage space.  I had been on a waitlist for a larger space and today was the deadline for moving from one to the other.  It sort of threw a monkey wrench into my plans for the day, including putting together the sneak peek email (including the sample block I haven't yet made and the directions for it that I haven't yet written).

I WILL get it out to everyone sometime this weekend, with my apologies to those of you who aren't busy with Christmas plans and, like me, probably wouldn't have time to look at it for at least a couple days anyway.

Ps.   I found my original two pair of simple trees and have added them to the list.

Four Tree Blocks

We now have 98 pairs ... and only need 2 more (pairs) to have enough for FIVE WINNERS.

Another squishy arrives

I love squishy packages.
I am waiting for only 1 more package with 1 block to complete my Nov. lucky win.
Somehow I'm already a few projects ahead in my brain and buying fabric for my son's quilt.
You can never have too much fabric right?
All the xmas gifts are finished (2 tablerunners) and everything else is wrapped.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Hints on next year's block lotto?

Sophie,
Are you giving any hints on what next year's block lotto holds for those of us eagerly awaiting the new year?

Thanks!
Gail

samplers

The last packet of sampler blocks arrived this morning from Belinda. Thanks, lovely blocks and thanks for the stash pieces. I do so love all the different fabrics, many that I don't see here in the stores. I hope you all have a great Christmas, bless you all.

samplers and trees

I have received sampler blocks from everyone but Belinda. I am hoping the last packet will arrive this week. Who knows with the Christmas mail. They are all wonderful and I can hardly wait to lay them all out.
I goofed with the tree width - that's what I get for quickly reading the instructions and rushing to get the blocks made up. I will try to get some done at the proper size before the end of the month.

trees

My December trees are finished, and please donate the chances to the other participants. It has been a bit of a struggle getting them finished, my machine refused to form a decent stitch. The upper tension was too loose and I managed to get some blocks done by tightening it, but the machine was going to get the better of me and started doing wierd things. I finally took it in to get checked and won't get it back till the new year. I finished off the remaining blocks on my trusty Singer Featherweight. I made an extra set of blocks because the purple jewel fabric appears almost black when it was sewn into the block. If it is okay they will just be an extra pair for the pot.

Best wishes to everyone over the Christmas season - have a happy and safe one.

My December blocks

Here are my blocks for December...not able to eek out any more during this super busy month!

I also donating my chances - good luck to everyone!

One More Set

Here is one more set of blocks that I made for December.  Sophie,  please make this set and the two previous sets I made as donations.  Thanks!

Merry Christmas everyone!!

These are the 5 sets that I made as part of the Sneak Peak at the beginning of the month. Since I was lucky enough to be a winner once this year, in the spirit of the holiday, I'd like to DONATE this month's blocks so that someone else gets the joy of receiving lovely blocks this year. Newbie offering trees

With hindsight, December wasn't the best month to be joining you lovely ladies, but I'd lurked long enough, watching all the patchwork loveliness here, so decided it was time to join in.

I found I didn't have much in the way of jewel colours, and I don't normally wash my fabrics first, so that delayed me a bit.

I have photographed two pairs of trees, but I understand that they don't both qualify as they aren't unique jewel fabrics. The smaller ones were my first attempt but they had much less contrast between the two tiers than I wanted, so I didn't want to risk wasting the second half of the fabric, so the top trees are my offering. I hope they are acceptable. I'm loving seeing the forest growing day by day :-)

I have four more sets ready to sew...probably get to them after Christmas.

I'm BACK

Two days without a computer felt like an ETERNITY.

I have never in my life had a problem with memory, but suddenly my Mac wouldn't start and was BEEPING in a very un-Mac-like way (seriously, it took me a while to accept that it was the computer and not the printer or something else in the apartment). Using my iPhone to search the web, I learned that the pattern of beeps meant that the Mac couldn't find any usable memory.  Yikes.

Getting it fixed was a comedy of errors--let's just say my experience with the Geniuses at the Apple Store Genius Bar had me thinking I might never buy another Apple product again--but it's back and better than ever (since I decided to add more memory while I was replacing the broken stuff).

Since I have been operating with only my iPhone for the past few days ... it might be a good time for everyone who has made blocks to double check that I haven't left you off the list or haven't updated your number of pairs of trees in the list or ... made some other goof.

My 2nd Sophie tote

Here's my 2nd sophie tote made with block lotto 16-patch winnings from a couple of years ago. This one is more autumnish:

I'm sending this to Sophie:

samplers

Three sampler blocks from Maree arrived today. Nice blocks. Thank you. Three packets to come.

More Trees

Here are my 5 pairs for the month. I really love the jewel tones but, this is not a combination I have tried until now. I have slowly been collecting some of the jewel colors and I almost didn't have enough for the 5 pairs.
I washed all my fabrics in warm water...made sure I had a nice seam allowance. I find if there are ever any problems with a block or two they can easily be fixed if there is a decent seam allowance to work with. To finish up I carefully (checked and re-checked) measured and trimmed all my blocks to the required sizes. Now, all that's left to do is 'hold my breath' and hope I win (again?) !!!!
Even though I have sewn liberated styles for a while I found these cute little trees to be a good challenge for me. I think all of the other tree blocks I have seen posted are just FABULOUS and I would like to HAVE THEM!!!!!!!

All Blocks Received

I received two great blocks from Balinda in the mail yesterday!  I have now received all 28 blocks from the November lotto winnings.  Thank you all so very much!!  I can't wait to put them all together into a quilt.......but that will have to wait until after Christmas.

Samplers received

A squishy from Caroline arrived yesterday and two arrived today from Mary Jane and from Andi. Thank you all, lovely blocks. I am anxious to get time to make up some trees and roses. Maybe this week, I hope.

More blocks received from...

  • Kasey
  • Kim
  • Maree
  • Sophie (you did a fine job figuring out postage on your own!)

Thanks, ladies!

How I love squishies!

I love getting mail, but getting squishies are the best!
Here's what I have so far. I think only maybe 2 more packages waiting to arrive.
Haven't played with layouts, just loving looking at them all!
I'm guilty of still not sending mine (I realized my blocks were 13" instead of 12 1/2") now they're trimmed and ready to go today. Nothing like delaying pleasure for the winners!

Two Pairs of Trees for the pot!

Hi everyone, against all odds I have been able to make 2 pairs of trees for the pot. May be able to get another 2 done yet!

Hope you are all well!

Roses....

....for Sophie. It wasn't bedtime yet when I finished the trees so I found some reds, pinks, and greens and made four 6" roses . Now I need an address to mail to. Thank you Sophie for the Block Lotto. I've had fun with it for many years!

I got my sewing room clean today...

....and rewarded myself with sewing time. The cleared off cutting table was crying out to be used! I made 5 pairs of blocks. I hope the colors are okay. I seem to not have many jewel tones in my stash...at least not in big enough pieces for these blocks.

Tomorrow it's back to the usual grind, but tonight was fun, making these trees.

My CATS love the roses, too

Log Cabin RosesI wanted to take a photo of the roses I've received from Carolyn, June and Mary Jane ... but if one cat wasn't inspecting them, the other was and I ended up with a lot of photos that look like this one. As you can see, Grace thought the roses were heavenly.

(I did get one photo of all the blocks sans cat--after I cropped him out of the frame.  Click the link to see Gracie's personal favorite ;-)

Roses in DecemberThank you for the lovely blocks.  I probably won't get back to working on my quilt until after the holidays, but I couldn't resist spreading them out on the design floor and enjoying them.

Believe it or not, there are still roses blooming in Austin, Texas.  Here's a photo of one taken near my office last week.

Trees....

Yay I get to play... Sorry for the terrible picture my design wall is buried (Christmas) the orange blocks on the right are donation blocks if anyone wants them... there was a little slub int he fabric that I didn't notice until I put the block together. Also if the yellow ones are too weird you don't need to count them Sophie.

More Wonderful Blocks Received

I have received November blocks from Kristin, Sophie, and Michelle.  All beautiful blocks!  Thank you ladies!!!

Roses for Sophie and Get Well Flying Geese for Michelle from San Diego

Because I finished my December trees I had some extra time to finally finish my get well flying geese for Michelle

and I made four 9.5" roses for Sophie!

Mailed 12/9/10.

I figured out a way to do the Get Well Geese that worked really well for me - blogged about it here...

Sophie's Trees

Sophie's Trees

It seemed like the only way I was going to get tree blocks made this month was to make an appointment with myself ... so I signed up for the local quilt store's UFO night last night and luckily someone cancelled so I moved up off the wait list and got a spot.  It was a fun night with soup salad and breadsticks from Olive Garden and for desert ... a cookie table.

A few of the ladies were curious about my blocks ... so I pulled out my phone, pulled up this blog and showed them all the great blocks everyone has been making.

I also took some step-by-step photo of the yellow/black blocks and will be posting those--you can find them here:

Adding Complexity to the Free-style Tree Block

I'll also add a link in the guidelines for the month.

November blocks mailed today

I mailed my 2 sampler blocks to Cory today (no waiting at the PO - a miracle!)

Sophie's Sampler Blocks Sent

I planned to be at the PO when the counter opened at 8:00 AM ... only to find out it opens at 9:00 AM :-(

I used the self-service station--which I realize in hindsight I did not have to wait until 8:00 to use.  Since it's my first experience weighing and mailing blocks with USPS self-service, I really want to know if there are any mailing problems with my squishies.

17 Comments Later ...

I came straight home tonight and played Block Lotto catch-up. 17 comments posted (from me) later, I think I've done it ;-)

I believe I have updated the list with everyone's new photos ... but it couldn't hurt for you to take a look and make sure that I have YOU on the list and the number of PAIRS of blocks I have for you is correct.

If I haven't skipped anyone, we now have 64 PAIRS OF TREES.  My plan is that winners this month will receive a set of 20-25 tree PAIRS, which means we already have enough for THREE WINNERS.

It's funny how even though I don't know that many people here yet, I'm still suddenly super-busy with holiday STUFF.   I feel like I'm dancing as fast as I can but can't manage to get everything done ... like my lotto blocks ... and some directions for making the more complex trees ... and mailing my sample blocks to all the November winners (which I hope to do tomorrow morning before work).

I hope you all are maintaining a better balance than me during the holiday season which is now well upon us ;-)

stars and sampler

The last packet of liberated stars has arrived from Kate A, forwarded by Belinda. Thank you. Lovely cheerful stars. I hope you are feeling better Kate. It's not nice to be under the weather anytime, but especially at this time of the year.
The first sampler block also arrived from Rhonda. It's also a star inside the string corners - a beautiful block.
I just love seeing all the different fabric patterns that other quilters choose, it is so fun getting little bits of fabric that I don't have in my stash or even have access to here. That is the joy of belonging to a block lotto, or a block swap. Thank you for the extra pieces of fabric in the packet from Kate/ Belinda - a nice surprise.

Block Mailed

My block for Linda will go out with today's mail!

question about December trees

I cut out fabric last night to start two pairs of trees, and I think I cut them too small, because I started with 6.5 inch wide strips. I think when I sew the two tree seams I will use up about an inch, leaving me with only a 5.5 inch block width. So should I have started with a 7.5 inch width or larger to end up with a 6.5 inch block?

More Blocks Received!!

The mailman brought me several envelopes yesterday, all full of beautiful and wonderful blocks.  I received blocks from Pat F., Maree, Pat H., Deana, Belinda, and June.  Belinda and June both included strips to add to my stash!!
Thank you all!!!

Apologies

My November blocks are ready to mail, but I haven't made it to the post office yet. As if life wasn't carzy enough my 17 year old DS wrecked DH's car last night. Not sure how everyone will get where they need to be. DH will have to ride his motorcycle in the cold...Anyway, I should get to mail them tomorrow.

block on the way

My one block has been mailed to Laura. Sorry for the delay- we finally moved, and I've been without internet (thank goodness I had class today to I can use the wifi!).
