Inspiration from January Bow Ties

For those of you who participated in the January 2009 block lotto with the bow tie block, you know it was very popular. I wasn't a winner that month, but was inspired by all the wonderful blocks everyone made to make a quilt for a grandson's graduation next year using that block. I think this block in plaids is perfect for that 'guy' in your life. This is still to be quilted, but I thought I'd share it as is.

I'm sorry to be missing out on participating in the lotto for the next few months because I will be out of the country and can't take my stash with me, but I'll be looking at all you do and being envious of the winners. See you all in December.

Blooming Bowties

I had to share this photo with everyone. I saw this pattern in the Clotilde catalog and thought how perfect it is to use for some pretty bowtie blocks and those applique posies we made in July 2007 for the lotto. Two lotto blocks combined in one quilt!

Lotto Bowtie Quilt

I wanted to share what I did with my bowtie winnings. First I had all the blocks sewn together on point with a plain block in between and decided I didn't like the setting. Yesterday I ripped the whole quilt top apart, started over and got the borders on it this morning. I didn't notice until I was taking the picture that I forgot to add the navy blue inner border! After all the work I did and ripping I decided I wasn't going to rip the borders off just to add the inner border. I'm sure my nephew will never know the difference. Now to get it sandwiched and quilted.

Plaid Bow Ties Redux

Guess what/who I thought of when I saw this Plaid Bow Tie quilt at the Dallas Quilt show yesterday? This is called Rings Around the Rainbow Ties by Dana Braden of Richardson, Texas.

By this point in the show I had run of out battery for the camera and took this with my phone, so the quality of the image could be better, but isn't it great? The background fabrics in this quilt are also plaid. It's really plaid-happy. The bow-tie blocks aren't quite the same pattern as ours–they are the three-dimensional kind, but I thought the look was very much the same.

Michelle (Momof11)'s January Bow Ties

I got my new machine and tested it out sewing 9 blocks for the lotto. The middle one might be pushing the definition of plaid a little....The new machine works great, and the 1/4" seam is right where it should be...no adjustments or learning curve.

ljrandolph's bow tie blocks...

Kate's bow ties

At last - nine bow ties (I promise the top left purple really is a plaid, even if it doesn't look it from the photo). These were quick blocks to make - the delay for me was in having no plaids in my stash!

Shelleys Bow Ties

Shelley (madme) made these eight blocks. I see a bow tied heart in the blocks laid out this way ;-)
