Milky Way blocks

Here are my first 5, I intend to complete 9 for the lotto. I sure like these blocks and hope that I get lucky in the draw!

Well, when I told Sophie I didn't think I'd have a chance to make blocks during the sneak peek period, I didn't think it would be this far into the month before I did finally have a chance! But I'm glad I managed to get some made as this block grew on me as I made them, and actually, though I was originally going to donate my chances, I think I have changed my mind! Amazingly enough, I did manage to put them all together the right way around the first time, but I confess to double checking against the instructions every time - usually I can just put a block together as I go with no cheat sheet, but not on this one... Still, it's a great block and if I don't win them, I think I might do it again, only a bit scrappier - for one thing, it might get rid of some of my scraps...

Hi everyone, Newbie Trudi here! I've made 9 blocks, although the photo doesn't seem to show the yellows too well, they are more on the buttery yellow shade. I hope you like them!

Sorry to hear that you are sick with the flu....bummer. I hope you get to feeling better real soon!
This month's lotto is a real challenge! The first block I made went together ok. However the second one got all topsy turvy and turned aroundy...ACK! I love the look of this block and the color combo! I will knock out a few more. Would it be ok to make the stars scrappy style within the same color way and value. It seems it would fit better with the other blocks that would be attached to it.
Just a thought.....

Three Blocks and an Update from Sophie

Here are three from me, with my chances donated to newbies or, if no one new joins this month, to those who have not yet won blocks in the lotto.



The colors in this photo aren't great; I promise these blocks are much prettier than they may seem.

As Lisa already noticed–and she really surprised me with just how quickly she did notice–today I put together some more usual-for-me directions for making the Milky Way Quilt Block. It was a nice coincidence because I happened to use her photo of her 11 blocks to show how cool these blocks blend together in my blog post with the directions. I have also updated the quick links on the left and the announcement message–you know, the placeholder, I originally posted on the first of the month:

The link for the block directions is there, along with the fabric guidelines and the historical reference for the block. It might be worth a look, even if you are pretty sure you know what you're doing. I tried something new-to-me with the assembly of the block I used for the photos and it was an interesting experiment and definately something to add to my quilter's box of tricks.

Finally, I archived our September activity–backdated so anyone looking for it in the future will find it on the last day of September, as usual–and updated the list for the blocks in September so far. Ginny, you'll notice that I left your twisted block off the list . . . just in case you decide you don't want to fix it to match the other (we all feel like that sometimes, or at least, I know I do).

With my three blocks, our total-so-far this month is 22 blocks.

I swear....

that the blocks are going in the mail! The Man said that he was going to mail them along with the bills and family cards last Tuesday...when we were going to the grocery store and I put Hazel in the back seat....I found all the mail!!! He SWEARS it will go out tonight, if not then I will do it tomorrow after work. (I get off at 1:30pm)

in the meantime, I LOVE this months blocks and went a little overboard. Yellow/blues one of my favorite combos. I made 12, but one turned out way wrong. I hope we get 2-3 winners so I can break them up a bit more, but for sure no two have 2 fabrics alike...sure one fabric in common, but not two!

Getting This Block Right

Because, this month, all of our blocks need to fit together, almost like a tesselating pattern, it's important that we all get the blue and yellow stars in the same location . . . and the black and white 4-patches all oriented correctly.

Being more than a little dyslexic myself, I thought I'd share my way of looking at the block.

Maybe it will help others or maybe it's just my own unique way of seeing this block . . . either way, here are my tips for "getting this block right, " every time.

1. I think of the block as a friendship star (with a 9-patch construction) in the upper left with a pieced sashing strip on the right side and bottom.

2. The friendship star is a blue star on a yellow background.

3. The black and white 4-patches are placed in the corners such that if you connected the dark squares, you would be drawing a circle around the blue friendship star.

4. When you add the pieces to the right side and bottom, you are creating partial friendship stars that are yellow stars on a blue background.

Yes, I am finally upright, though I am still coughing up stuff and feeling lousy . . . I cut some fabrics for blocks yesterday and managed to make this one today. I will try to get some formal directions on-line soon and update the side-bar etc. As I told someone in email, I feel bad that my icky case of the flu is hurting the block lotto this month because these blocks will make a great scrappy quilt for some winner . . . if we can manage to make enough of them ;-)

September Blocks

Hello ladies!
Just letting you know that I will be sending off the September blocks tomorrow or Tuesday at the latest. I have been out of town on business until this weekend and I am trying to catch up on many things! I haven't forgotten you!
