Sophie's Geese

I love your geese quilt so far Sophie! I was thinking it might be fun to make a bunch of blocks in different colors and then I see your scrappy geese. I can't wait to see what you decide to do for the border.

A Goose of Another Colour

These month's block inspired me to pull out some scrappy swap Flying Geese units and put them together into blocks like ours. The FG units are 3 by 6 inches (finished); my blocks are 9 inches (finished size).

I mostly put them together into monochromatic blocks with light-medium-dark flying geese triplets. It was fun putting them together because the swap was on of those "anything goes" kind of things and I had all kinds of fabrics represented. I made a few extra geese, including some from some of the jewel tone fabrics that were still on my work table. I added the same tan fabric strips to all my blocks. As you can see the look is completely different . . . but still pretty interesting (or at least, I think so ;-)

I haven't decided yet on borders. In my mind, I'm flip-flopping between more scrappiness in a pieced border, a simple darker fabric frame, or a combination of both. I'll let you know how it turns out . . . the cats just want me to decide and stop using THEIR bed as a design wall and to put the flannel quilt back on it so they can crawl under it and have a warm, cuddly cat nap ;-)

Barbara's Blocks

Here are my 5 blocks. I don't have too many jewel tones in my collection or I would have made more.

Beginning "the Heart In A Snowball Quilt" Feb Win! 2009

Feb Quilt~ ~~"Heart in a Snowball... has begun~
Hello Everyone:
I've begun to put blocks together from my recent winnings in the "heart in a snowball" block lotto. This was so easy to do. I did this much yesterday morning.
Do you see your block?
Happy Quilting!

Julie's Geese

Here are Julie's 6 blocks. She emailed her photo and told me that she's donating her chances this month because she hasn't yet made anything from the Amish Houses she won in November. What great self-imposed discipline.

Julie's blog is Floribunda Quilts . . . I enjoyed her recent adventures in London. I also like the idea she's got going for those Amish houses. Check it out.

Sophie's Flock of Jeweled Geese Blocks

I got a little carried away as I was distracting myself from my call-back on my mammogram and another medical appointment I have this week . . .

. . . and thirty blocks later, here's the result. The flash washed out the color a little; I couldn't wait for daylight to share ;-)

I used the no-waste geese method for most of these and, as I promised, I used several no-longer available favorite fabrics from my stash. I hope the winners will enjoy them. That Patricia Campbell red rose print is especially precious to me. (Remember, you can click any of the block images to get a larger version if you want to check them out).

I'll be donating my 9 chances to any newbies that join this month (or, if we don't attract any newbies, anyone who hasn't yet won a lotto) and adding the 21 extra blocks to sweeten the pot and help us get to a two winner month . . . at least ;-)

Our new total for the month so far is 83 blocks.

Here are my Ruby, Saphire and Amythest blocks. That's all I have for jewel tones.

Heart blocks received

Hello, everyone, I have received blocks from Beatice,Gail Ginny, Laura, Mary Jane, Sandy, and Wilma. Thank you so much.

Step-by-Step Block Direction with Photos

I've blogged some step by step photos of my favorite way to make this block here, Jeweled Geese Block. I plan to add two other ways of making the block to that tutorial, but I confess that I'm running out of steam tonight . . . look for them in the next day or two.

I've decided to use some of my favorite, no-longer available fabrics for my blocks . . . I've cut into some special Alex Anderson yellow, Pat Cambell red and the purple hand-dye in the step-by-step photo–remembering after the fact that purple rarely photographs well. I thought the variations in color had a gemstone quality . . . or maybe something like a geode, split open.

Heart Blocks to Laura

Laura,
I got your blocked mailed out to you today. Congrats!

Do You Have Questions?

Someone emailed me with questions, asking if I (and this block lotto) were going away. That's not my intention.

I know that Janet Wickell is interested in establishing something new and different on the quilting forum. I understand that may be preferable and easier for some of you . . . or you may decide to do both (and double your chances ;-)

As long as there is interest, I will continue with this block lotto as I have envisioned it for this year, with:
  • Everyone is welcome to join
  • All the blocks are beginner friendly (with an occasional S*T*R*E*T*C*H)
  • All the blocks will be 6 inches (finished size)
  • 2009 blocks will be based on Traditional Blocks
  • We'll post photos and mail our blocks to the winners
  • The target set size for the winner(s) will be 48 blocks
I think I have some great blocks and interesting color-combinations for you this year. As usual, I over-thought it and worked pretty hard to put it together.

Remember, if you are having problems with the blog format, you can ALWAYS email me with your block photos and info.

I updated the FAQs post. If you have any new questions or suggestions, please add them as comments here or email me (and I'll update the FAQ with the results to keep all the info in one easily findable place.)

Thanks.

Edited to add that I used some nervous energy tonight to add our most recent blocks to the left sidebar–it's getting to be quite the long list. I also thought I'd mention the Illustrated History of the Block Lotto post that I put together about a year ago. If you're newish to the lotto, you might want to see where we've been, what we've made and read about some of the lessons learned . . . there have been some in the 6 of the last 7 years that I've been doing this block lotto thing ;-)
