Red & White top

As long as I'm being efficient and getting all my accumulated blocks made up into tops, etc, here's something I finished today - the top with the red and white blocks I won from March's lotto. This is probably a record for me in terms of the short length of time it took me from receiving the last set of blocks to assembling them into a top... Of course, it will be quite a while before the top is quilted, because it's quite big, so will need to go to the longarmer, and as I am not made of money (darn) I only send one every few months - there are a couple on the list before this one gets a turn...

After playing around with the blocks literally and in my head for a while, I decided to listen to them - they'd been telling me they wanted to be set on point. Since I happened to have quite a good amount of white fabric in my stash, I went ahead and did it. Annoyingly, the blocks were right - they DID obviously want to be set on point. I have to say, I love the mix of reds - they look great together, and look even better when there's a little more light - I forgot to take a photo of this before dinner when it was still sunny, so this was taken about 9pm, when the light was starting to go. It's going to (eventually) be a nice quilt, though as it won't match anything in my house, I've no idea what I'm going to do with it!

  1. Beautiful! Just beautiful!! I don't think it needs to match with anything in your house, just love it and use it when you feel in a red mood.

  2. Kate L North - this is WONDERFUL..... I have started making this block to use up sort of "alike" fabrics, but not really matchy .... and this setting is very good..... and your top is finished.... what are you going to do with your quilt? you are going to snuggle under it in the cold..... who knows one day down the road red just may match something in your house.

posting as anonymous as blogger kills any other "sig" I try.

  3. Kate, this setting is spectacular. I can't wait to see it quilted ;-)

As for whether it matches anything in your house, I would ask you to consider art. Art doesn't have to match ... and I truly believe quilts are art. If you like it, keep it and it will tell you where it wants to go ...

  4. Your chosen setting is very appealing - esp the thin red border. I may have to copy it!

  5. I like the on- point setting and I would say put it on your bed 3 times a year for Valentines, 4th of July and Christmas. Mine it next in the quilt table here...soon as the borders get attatched that is.

  7. It looks fantastic. Congratulations ongetting it finished so quickly. I have the quilt I made from my first Block Lotto win (Liberated Roses)on my lounge room floor at the moment. I have done some simple quilting and am now about to put the binding on. I absolutely love it - it is so bright and cheerful. I dec8ded to try and finish this before I start with the blocks I won last month.

  8. Thanks everyone. I agree, the setting really works. I was pretty sure it would which is why I went ahead and did the on point setting even though it's a lot more work than a straight setting. Feel free to use the idea yourself, Liz! If I keep this quilt - not sure whether I will or not - will probably depend on whether any occasion comes up around the time it's finished (like a wedding or something) - I will probably just throw it on my bed occasionally, as suggested. Though perhaps not for 4th of July, which is not a holiday we celebrate over here...

  11. Looks terrific! I've seen these blocks set many times, but I don't think I've ever seen it on point before. Really a good setting for it!
