Stars and Polka-Dots

Faced with making quilts from the Asian star blocks AND the polka-dot blocks I was lucky enough to win two months in a row I decided to combine my booty and make one twin-sized quilt for my 10-year-old son Peter. I was able to buy a sparkly Asian-feeling green striped fabric for the sashing----green's his favorite color. And I grouped the blocks in sets of 4, with 2 dots and 2 stars each, to balance the patterns and make it more "boyish." Needless to say, I wasn't able to use blocks that had too much pink in them, or a couple of the cool blocks with pictures on them he didn't like ("I won't be able to sleep with that Asian woman looking at me!"). I'm already working to make a baby quilt for a girl with some of the left-over blocks. Thanks to all! Ginny

  1. I confess that I never in a million years would have decided to put those two sets of blocks together, but I LOVE THIS QUILT and those blocks really DO work together. It reminds me of a workshop I did with Sharyn Craig were she showed us how a set of blocks can be made into any style quilt ... just as you made our scrappy polka dots into an Asian quilt!

I hope your son likes the finished product, too.

  2. Absolutely gorgeous! I really like your sashing fabric too! I have it in several other colors. Like Sophie just said, I would not have thought to use the stars and circle together, but WOW, you DID and it looks fabulous!!

  7. I think the other thing to be gleaned from your wonderful quilt is that if you have a set of lotto blocks (or swap blocks) that aren't singing to you ... consider mixing them up with another block with a strong theme to push them in a new direction.

  8. That's a great use of those sets of blocks! I even recognize a few of my asian stars. Love the brightness of this quilt. Your son will feel very special to have one of your quilts.

  10. This is totally awesome!
You are very clever to have combined the circles and stars and do the blocks of 4.
    Really great quilt!
Your son is lucky (even if he didn't like the Asian lady, hee, hee)

  12. Beautiful colors and wonderful way to combine the two blocks. I really like the way the quilt isn't just for a little boy, but can be used when he is a man too. Great inspiration. Makes me want to just rip apart the quilt I started for my son - 15 years ago! He might as well get an adult cool quilt since it's taken me so long to do it! I can't believe how much the style of quilts have changed since I first was making quilt tops! Thank you for sharing this.
