shoo fly advice anyone?

After I made blocks for the challenge, I got carried away with making shoo fly blocks and ended up with about 80 blocks. I'm not sure this is an appropriate use of the blog, but would be interested to hear any ideas regarding layout. The colors kind of lent themselves to "steps," but it doesn't really seem liberated. I'll play with it again tomorrow.

The florals and blues were given to my family. The guy who gave it to use thought it was from the 50s (when his mom worked in a clothing factory -- these seem to be leftover shirt pieces). In any case,I have a lovely green that I will use for the eventual border, but I could also use it for stripping.

My sewing room is small, so I apologize that I can't get a good pic of the 7x10 block layout. Apart from the ones in the pic, I have 10 left-mostly with pink centers. The blocks are 7.5 inches.

  1. Wow, Wow, WOW! How great are those blocks? Yes, it's entirely appropriate to blog about it here ... and be sure to show us the final result (or in-progress updates).

Have you tried a Trip Around the World type arrangement? Depnding on how many of each color you have, that could be interesting, too. Here's a photo of an Amish TatW–you would have fewer "trips."

I like the steps, too ... and I know some others here are going to have some good ideas for you.

  2. I love it...

I think the way you have it together
    looks great..

But, there are so many ideas that
you could do, but, I like how you have it in steps....

Thanks for sharing that was great
    pictures to share.

  3. Amazing! Very pretty the way you have it - but would be fun to see in the round the world pattern too just to see how it goes so if you do rearrange please take another photo and share it.

I've posted some little blocks I've been working on in my folder for Libquilters on Yahoo: http://tinyurl.com/y6k3y7p

I cut the points free style - but the cross lines are measured - so is this still considered liberated? Or never mind the label - but if I go ahead with my little plan of making roads and plain blocks in the setting would it look too strange - or cool?

I really like the way you have alternated the backgrounds so you have the different colors in your blocks - very nice.

  4. Also, your choice of colors is very nice - creative. I would have probably stuck with the colors of the rainbow - the way you did it is much, much better. Lots of style.

  5. Thanks all! I wish I could take credit for the colors, but I stuck with what was in the bag.

I started rearranging them into courthouse steps. Will try to post a pic by Friday.
