The directions for making the block can be found on Bonnie's Quiltville website here:
Pineapple Blossom
We'll be making the 9 inch version of the block from 3 1/2-inch squares and 2-inch strips.
COLOR/FABRIC GUIDELINES
This months block will be a controlled scrappy colorway, with a couple of color rules:
WHITE - use white for the 3.5 " squares used for the block. Your white fabric may be solid, a white on white (WOW) print or a multi-print fabric that is predominately white and will read as white in the block.
GOLD - use gold for any two of the rectangles used in making the block. Your gold (or yellow) fabric may be solid, a tone-on-tone (TOT) print or a multicolor print that is predominately gold (or yellow) and reads as gold in the block.
GRAY - use gray for any two of the rectangles used in making the block. Your gray fabric may be solid, a tone-on-tone (TOT) print or a multicolor print that is predominately gray and reads as gray in the block.
The other 4 rectangles used in making the block may be any fabrics (at least 2) of your choice.
MAXIMUM NUMBER OF BLOCKS IS 9
If you make multiple blocks this month, you may use the same white, gold and gray fabrics. Be sure to vary the placement of the gold and grays in the block and to mix it up with the additional fabrics you add--your blocks may look related, but shouldn't look like twins.
HOW MANY BLOCKS CAN I WIN
The target set size for this month is 36 blocks ... but each winner will win at least 20. Not coincidentally, those are the numbers of blocks needed to make each of the two quilts at the top of Bonnie's directions page.
BONUS TRIANGLES
As part of making the block, you may choose to sew up the bonus triangles. If you won't use them yourself, consider sending them along to the May winner(s), so that they might be used in a pieced border, like the one in Bonnie's quilt at the top of the directions web page.
BLOG POST LABELS
For your blog posts, please use as many of the following labels as apply:
Pineapple Blossom - for any post about this month's lotto
May 2011 photos - for any post with photos of this month's blocks
PB-mailed - when you mail your blocks to the winners at the end of the month
PB-received - if you are a winner and are posting about receiving blocks that have been mailed to you
THE VIRTUAL QUILT
Here are some of the blocks made by Cheri, Ginny, Julie P, Kate, Kim (HK), Laurina, Liz, LPB and Toni. Kathy also made blocks, but I wasn't able to crop them in a useful way ... sorry, Kathy. Thanks everyone for the inspiration.
I chose the simplest possible layout here, but I hope that everyone plays around with the blocks they make to see all the possibilities.
There is a log cabin variation called Pineapple, which is similar to this but has the triangles on all four corners. I'd assumed that's where Bonnie Hunter got the name from... but I'd love to know if she had other reasons ;)
ReplyDeleteI understand where the pineapple half of the name came from, but ... blossom?
ReplyDeleteLooks great! I always look forward to seeing your "virtual" quilts.
ReplyDeleteThe blossom comes when the blocks are turned with four color corners connecting in the center...looks like a zinnia or a star burst sort of. I made one of these for my youngest's 15th birthday...we had a bedroom redo. I used the 2.5" strips since I had a bunch cut from swaps. I thought I sent in the pic to bonnie's site for the gallery, but I don't see it there...must have been when I didn't quite know how to send photos...and I had dial up back then...I'm going to love this block ESPECIALLY with grey and gold in it...
ReplyDeleteSad to discover that my posting rights were revoked. I've made nine blocks for this month. Can I please play?
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, since "Just Jenn" has email disabled, I can't confirm who exactly you are. Please email me with your request. Thanks. I can't wait to see your blocks.
